Bon Appétit Restaurant says ‘goodbye’ to plastic straws and explores more ways to reduce plastic use
Dunedin, Florida (September 21, 2018) – Bon Appétit Restaurant has joined the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Florida DEP) ‘Skip the Straw’ pledge. By joining the pledge, Bon Appétit Restaurant has committed to eliminating use of plastic straws by replacing them with bio-degradable paper straws throughout the restaurant at both their outdoor and indoor dining areas. According to statistics from FloridaDEP.com, about 90% of seabirds and 30% of sea turtles have plastic in their stomachs. It was a troubling realization for the company’s management team, as Bon Appétit Restaurant is located directly on the Dunedin waterfront.
“It’s a small change, but it makes a big impact,” says Thomas Riedl, Bon Appétit Restaurant’s Manager, “Marine life is a part of our daily life here at the restaurant. We look out our restaurant windows and see dolphins playing and seabirds hunting for fish. The waterfront, the sea life, are all very much part of Bon Appétit’s identity. So, once we realized 90% of trash in the ocean was made of plastic, we knew it was time to join the movement and make the change.”
In addition to ending plastic straw use, Bon Appétit Restaurant has also changed their carry-out, to-go bags from plastic to paper. Through these changes, the company hopes to inspire, educate and encourage their guests to reduce single plastic usage.
